TIMELINE: An Observation on Jeff’s Last 5 Years

OVERVIEW

I’m gonna keep this as simple as possible,
because the civil/criminal case of my brother:

A "MENTALLY ILL"
MAN IN OKLAHOMA

is so very complicated,
and SO MUCH is going on right now, it’s

MIND
BOGGLING

 Hard to know what to write about.
Every single day brings a new shock
and/or challenge.

Looking back on the PAST FIVE YEARS
my brother has officially been:

1. HOMELESS six times.
2. HUD (subsidized) housing - once for 5 months, 2013.
3. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * Osawatomie State Hospital in Kansas – 2 months, 2013.
            * A Residential Care Facility (nursing home in KS) – 2 months, 2013.
            * Wagoner Community Hospital (Okla.) – 8 weeks over the holidays.
3. MHAOK (subsidized mental housing) – one month in 2014.
4. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * Tulsa Behavioral Health Center (TCBH) – one month, 2014.
            * Carl Albert Community Mental Health Center (CACMHC) – 2 months, 2014.
            * Family & Children’s Services Crisis Care Center (FCS CCC) – 2 months, 2014.
            * TCBH again – 2 weeks, 2014.
5. Family paid for extended stay hotel so he wouldn’t be homeless, 2014.
6. MHAOK housing again – 9 months into 2015.
7.  Appeared at elderly mother’s home in freezing weather, middle of the night, and of course she wouldn’t turn him away, although the meds(*) have made him have fixed delusions, and he thinks he OWNS her home, and that sometimes she is an imposter.  (*per Genesight.com DNA swab proving medication allergies/intolerance/contra-indication/unable to metabolize)
8.  Residential Care Facility (nursing home in McAlester) – one week, 2015.  Age 46.
9. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * Laureate (Tulsa).  Private hospital.  Only psych beds avail. – One month, 2015.
            * Laureate discharged Jeff to the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter, Tulsa.
            * Family paid for extended stay hotel so he wouldn’t be homeless, 2015.
10.  Emergency Appendectomy as a HOMELESS PERSON, St. Francis Hospital, 2015.
11. Back to Salvation Army Shelter (Tulsa) – (must have TB card, or not admitted)
12. Back to elderly mom’s house….can be very scary.  Hard truths. – two months, 2015.
13. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * Ardmore Crisis Stabilization Unit – two weeks, 2015.
            * Transferred to Griffin Memorial Psychiatric Hospital, Norman, OK  2 ½ mos, 2015.
            * Family tells Griffin Social Worker Jeff’s getting WORSE and WORSE on “meds.”
            * Griffin discharged Jeff with a 2 week-long-lasting medication(*) injection Dec 2, 2015
               (*a prescription drug we now have proof that Jeff's DNA cannot metabolize/tolerate:
                Genesight.com)
            * Griffin gave Jeff a BUS TICKET TO HOMELESSNESS IN TULSA from Norman.
            * Family mailed a winter coat, and a family friend delivered it to Griffin.
            * Two days later, COPES (Crisis Intervention in Tulsa) had to be called – DELUSIONS
14. MHAOK housing again – THANK GOD for housing.  FREEZING WINTER!
15. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * FCS CCC again –One month/inpatient on 47th birthday 2016 …MHAOK rent paid by mom.
            * Transferred to TCBH again – two months, 2016. …MHAOK rent paid by mom.
16. Back to his apartment living for three weeks…  (mom is his SS rep payee)
17. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * FCS CCC – one week, May 2016. …MHAOK rent paid by mom.
18. Back to his apartment living for three weeks… (mom handles his bills)
19. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * FCS CCC – two weeks, June 2016. …MHAOK rent paid by mom.
20. Back to his apartment living for three more weeks… (mom helps all the time)
21. ARREST DAY July 26, 2016 – SO DELUSIONAL due to ALL THE FORCED PSYCHIATRIC DRUGGING(*)
               (*per Genesight.com DNA swab.  Proof.)
22. DLMCJC Tulsa County Jail – 111 days Jeff held in solitary/segregation.
23.  Deemed incompetent by the court, sent to OFC, VINITA – Nov 14, 2016.
24. Forced into a Psychiatric Hospital:
            * Oklahoma Forensic Center (OFC), Vinita, OK – Eleven months, until Oct. 26, 2017.
            (Changing RX weekly, family documenting, Jeff getting worse & worse)
25. The magical “7 competency questions” Jeff answers correctly – Oct. 25, 2017. (still delusional)
26. SENT BACK TO JAIL in Tulsa.  MENTAL PODS – segregation again 23 hrs/day.
27. Jeff losing weight, alone, long hair, dirty, cold turkey DETOX from forced RX.  Very delusional.
28. Several Court dates.  Jail orders a new competency evaluation.
29. Jeff spent Christmas in CELL W, alone with his delusions.  Jail ignores AIP treatment requests.
30. Chief Public Defender takes over Jeff’s case, early January 2018.
31. Jeff moved out of jail, to TCBH for psychiatric “treatment.”
32. Jeff spent his 49th birthday at TCBH last month, not responding to forced drugging....except for getting worse!

...and the beat goes on.
We’ve no idea how long he’ll be at TCBH,
And YES, we are THANKFUL HE IS OUT OF JAIL!!
but the FORCED DRUGGING IS

NOT WORKING!!!!!

It never worked leading up to his criminalization:
   ***It CAUSED his criminalization.

HOPING and PRAYING for CHANGE.

May Jeff’s horrific LIFE be a teaching tool for all entities charged with caring for him.
And may the "treatment" teams
pay close attention,
and help to heal him.
FIND THE ROOT CAUSE.
No more RX "bandaids" for symptoms
T h i s  *  i s  *  o u r
m o s t  *  f e r v e n t  *  p r a y e r
*JEFF HAS SUFFERED ENOUGH*

Now you can see for yourself, THE BROKEN SYSTEM HAS NOT WORKED.
The broken system
has made JEFF WELTON worse.
WASTING TAX DOLLARS WHILE HE GETS SICKER IS UNACCEPTABLE!
(We're talking millions of dollars wasted in the name of "treatment.")

And there are many more just like him.
Our work is for all those suffering.
WE ARE ON IT.

Neverland: Turning This Ship Around

Sorry for the delay since my last blog...
LOTS going on.
Some good, some bad, mostly just stressful,
and keeping us very VERY busy.

Maybe these blahhhhhhgs are helping move the mountain?
(I think they might be....shhh...whispering so I don't disturb the process...)
I'm staying in gratitude and hope...
We need many miracles....

First, let me say a huge THANK YOU
for all the wondeful people that have shared and donated to our YouCaring crowd-sourcing campaign
to help fund what we hope will be a systemic changing legal case obo my brother,
Jeff Welton.
In two weeks, we are 6% to our minimum goal of $50K.
Please keep up the support.
We are humbled by the care you've shown.
We need it to go viral!!

*****
If you've been reading these blogs, you know Jeff is diagnosed as "mentally ill" and has been being criminalized in the Tulsa County Jail and the OFC in Vinita - then back to the new mental pods at DLMCJC.  This round of criminalization started on 6/26/16.  It's been a year and a half, ongoing.

The main point I'd like to make today is:

JEFF HAS DONE NOTHING TO DESERVE
the way he's been treated the past 18 months.

Because of a delusional episode, he was manhandled, thrown in jail on that hot July day in 2016, kept for 111 days in a small, dark, solitary cell... allowed no books, and the detention officers ended up tazing him and administering a neurotoxin that Jeff is allergic to and then slapping him with another in-house FELONY on 10/13/16 because he was again - (wait for it >>) delusional.  Let's see, #doingthemath - that was DAY 79 of the torture chamber, I mean segregation cell.
Just thinking about this really ticks me off.
I hope and pray those officers have all had Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) since then, as that was pure evil.  Not understanding after ALL THAT TIME, that my brother was not in his right mind, and they still found every way to punish him day after day, on and on and on...  I don't want to sound mean, but they seem NOT HUMAN to me.  Definitely inhumane behavior.  Sure, a hard job, but they knew Jeff was suffering, and they kicked him when he was down.  Over and over again.
If I WERE a mean person, I'd say it seemed like they were getting their jollies.
But I'm not that mean.
Roger that.

A month later, Jeff was sent in an incompetent state, to the Oklahoma Forensic Center.  11/14/16.

The family ...
Constant involvement - as much as allowed.
Constant communications sent, mostly ignored.
All documented.  Never idle.
#TeamJEFF
We have and will continue to TRY TO IMPROVE things, not just for our loved one, but for YOURS, too...or your neighbors, or that person you don't understand that has issues...  Because in Oklahoma, (which I'm pretty sure is officially the world's biggest jailer. #mustfindthatarticle #ACLUiBelieve) - over HALF of the over-incarcerated have a mental illness diagnosis.
WHAT'S THE DEAL, OKLAHOMA?
SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE.

Anyway...  after another eleven months at OFC, Jeff was sent BACK to Tulsa JAIL and the lovely new regime in charge at DLMCJC, which now has the newly-minted, long-awaited mental pods.  We were hopeful this time the stay at jail to "await trial" would be better than last year's stay.

Hardly.  Barely.  Disappointingly NOT really.

Basically, Jeff just had a window to look through, showing him open spaces he was NOT allowed to go.  Some windows HIGH above, so the sun can come into the space. And brighter paint...not as dark, that's good.  That's about it on the improvements from my perspective.  Yes, Jeff was put BACK in a segregated cell (W) in Level 2 out of 4 levels, the lower levels are the ones that don't "act right" so get NO PRIVELEDGES.

Keep in mind..they brought him back from Vinita to get that TRIAL GOING...
Punitive, you know.  Punish.
That's what we're here for, folks.  Step right up, get your ticket.  It's quite a show...those new mental pods.  NOT.
I'm sorry if the truth hurts, but Jeff got WORSE there.  Truth.

Here's a Tulsa World article from January 19, 2018, written by Michael Overall (& photos by Mike Simons)
that serves as an update on how it's going in the new DLMCJC mental pods, and shows my parents visiting and putting money on the kiosks for Jeff's account.
We thank the Tulsa World and these talented and kind gentlemen for bringing light to this story, for all the criminalized mentally ill in Tulsa.  There are way too many.
http://www.tulsaworld.com/homepagelatest/tulsa-jail-s-mental-health-pod-full-but-we-re/article_025ecab9-8b39-52de-9d6e-2e83295d87dd.html

Not to rehash, but...
I've already blogged about the new jail administrator and his DOC mindset, bringing all kinds of new HARD*SS rules to the "mentally ill" in the new pods.  That man just doesn't get it.  At all.
He needs CIT training, if he hasn't had it.

Boss man should try sitting alone in a segregation cell for months and see how he fares.

The jail administrator is like the ship captain, right?
I wonder - would he go down with his ship?

If that means with the people on the ship, nope.
This guy is more like a Captain Hook character.
If you consider how jails / prisons stay full, and how they make money off the inmates in so many ways...  Captain Hook took the kids from their dreams,
to a bad place in Neverland.

I'm a writer, so sue me.
But if the archetype fits........

Jeff is like a child in many ways.  His issues, and now the BRAIN DAMAGE from being force-drugged hundreds, maybe thousands of times over almost 30 years, Jeff IS WORSE FOR THE WEAR, and may never get to... grow up.  He struggles more than you can imagine.  We speak to him daily.  We hear how his days go.  They are sad. They are scary.  His thoughts are caught up in a past mixing the real with the delusions - borne from living a life of sheer torment for decades, without enough compassionate people to HELP HIM.  Yesterday he called me three times, and the last call he was speaking gibberish.
DAY 8 of "meds."

WILL NO DOCTOR EVER TRY TO FIND THE ROOT CAUSE OF JEFF'S ISSUES?
They only use RX as patches and bandaids then send him on his merry way...  #Arrrrrrrg!
You should see the druglist database our mother has kept all these decades.
TRULY a miracle Jeff is still alive after being forced to endure all these chemicals, all these years.
His life will end up an example of WHAT NOT TO DO.
Wait and see.

NOW ~~~~
We have an update I'm just going to touch on.
It seems hopeful on the surface, but don't let it fool you.

Through some legal wrangling, Jeff was moved from jail
the day after MLK day Tuesday, 01/17/18.

Yay ... you think?  On basic levels FOR SURE:
YAY:  Respectable, healthier food.
(an attorney recently described the food at jail as DOG FOOD.)
YAY:  Socialization.  BETTER, absolutely.
No law enforcement officers bearing down on him 24/7.
(Someone with paranoid issues CANNOT shake that off when detention officers are the only people he interacts with on the daily.  BASIC COMMON SENSE.)

So yeah, Jeff is in a "treatment" facility, now.  It took some doing and we are grateful.  But the downside is...they started the contra-indicated RX the very first day.  So, now the family begins again...informing, getting releases signed, establishing our treatment advocate rights, and educating a new set of doctors/caregivers that THIS PERSON has two illnesses that mimic psychosis.  The RX have NEVER fixed Jeff.  We blame the RX for keeping him in the system.
These drugs are dependent.  THAT'S RIGHT, professionals...if you don't understand that, please do your homework.  And while you're at it, read Pulitzer nominee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Robert Whitaker's ANATOMY OF AN EPIDEMIC
to learn why mental illness statistics are rising in this country.
https://www.madinamerica.com/anatomy-of-an-epidemic-2/
Mental illness numbers are going up, not down.
"Treatment" is many times NOT in a pill.
Sometimes it's in therapy,
and from micronutrients,
and in an environment that is peaceful, tranquil,
- NOT armed and ready to kill.
Sometimes the pill...the "treatment" does quite the opposite of what's intended.
Many things that must be turned around,
starting with the ship.
Instead of Hook's brig the Jolly Roger,
let's have a vessel in this story more like
battleship, the USS Constitution.
My family got to tour her
in Boston Harbour a couple of years ago.
What stories she holds and what inspiration she elicits.
Also known as Old Ironsides,
her first duties were to provide protection
for American merchant shipping.
Noble AND tough.
That's the kind of ship we need, moving foward...
to win the wars waged on the mentally ill in this country.
#Noble #Tough #InspiringGOOD #ProtectingOthers #NoPiratesAllowed
I dream of seeing a blue sky when the smoke from cannonballs dissipates.
I dream of soft pillows for Jeff to lay his head
instead of the stark, cold, plastic pad he's been sleeping on for months.
I want Jeff to go to sleep at night and dream sweet dreams
not the haunting nightmares that make him scream out in terror
that he's been living for more than half his life.
No more walking the plank.  No more forced drugging.  No more criminalization.
If only we were there as a country...as a people...but sadly, we are not.  Yet.
But Jeff's legal case may get us there!
We are working very hard and putting it all on the line to see real change happen.
For today, Jeff is out of jail.  Though the charges have NOT been dropped.  We finally got some help after many calls, many posts, many emails and many suggestions of communicating with the likes of the Tulsa County Commissioners, and all kinds of people that can and should make a difference.
So many players in this complex story.
Some are stepping up.
And I can't post without saying that tomorrow is Jeff's 49th birthday - January 25th.
Another special day in another facility....  #SuperSad  #WeLoveHim
Peter Pan and TinkerBell...
Neverland should be a good place.
The pirates have taken up residence, but good will win in the end.  I still believe.......
And that JAIL (DLMCJC)... and their lack of care for MY brother's mental issues, well...they can stay forever in the bad part of Never NEVER LAND.
I hope Jeff NEVER EVER GOES THERE AGAIN.
OLD IRONSIDES (poem)
by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
Aye tear her tattered ensign down
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon's roar;—
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more.
Her deck, once red with heroes' blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o'er the flood,
And waves were white below,
No more shall feel the victor's tread,
Or know the conquered knee;—
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!
Oh, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;
Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail,
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!
A Million $$$: The High Stakes Deal
Hello Oklahoma, and world.
I'm hoping this reaches far and wide...  It's more on the sad tale of how impossible it is to HELP a "mentally ill" loved one being criminalized in our country.  Even worse in particular states.
If you've read my blog, you know my brother, Jeff, is being criminalized.
This isn't the first time.
This has been going on since 1989.
Why did he get arrested?  It's complicated.
The drugs they force on him created his fixed delusions, but even though our mother gave each and every hospital and care facility and doctor ample information on Jeff's history, they kept injecting him, month after month, to his detriment.  Though that's not the direct focus of today's blog, I have to include it in case you wonder why he's treated like a criminal.  It's the current and unproven medical model, Big Pharma, forced drugging - even when it fixes nothing for Jeff, and is ALL a guessing game. Add in misdiagnoses and the ignoring of our mother's communications plainly telling the facilities charged with "treating" Jeff, how he would react to (in these instances) Abilify and Invega Sustenna...  uhmmm... sometimes scarily.  Direct correlation from brain drug to behavior.
(I've briefly mentioned this in an earlier blog.)  And to be clear, Jeff has never used illicit drugs. The drugs we speak of, have been forced on him in the name of "treatment."
His past experience should've taught the caregivers something.  Mom sure tried, but for naught.  Mother officially informed all the professionals, and it is all documented.  Yet, let the record show (because we have the official medical records) that Jeff was rapidly deteriorating on those "meds" - which led directly to the delusional incident of his arrest.  Paper trails are a pain, but they are indisputable as evidence.  All Jeff did was try to run from more forced drugging.
So.  That being said...
Jeff's case has civil aspects, and it has criminal aspects.  These sometimes intersect, but are separate for legal cases, and require different lawyers.  This case is a monster.  We have 30 years of records and reams of papers in files.  Thousands of emails the whole family is cc'd on.  A zillion links and attachments.  Several email accounts to safeguard, hard copies, and flashdrives safely tucked away.  This is the case that will break the system of it's bad habits.
You
     know
          what
               they
                    say
                         about
GOOD INTENTIONS,  right?
Mom's long-term brilliance, due diligence, life-altering sacrifices, back-breaking/nonstop/fierce/fire in her gut to SAVE HER SON, is coming together, now.  Finally.
Let's put aside the civil case, for now.  That is broader, more far-reaching, and will be systemic changing for one and for all.  HUGE.  But hot on the burner is how Jeff is doing RIGHT NOW, today.
Not well.  I'll do you one better.  He's doing terribly.  His life has been one continuum of the most horrible hand dealt in the history of a white guy in the western world.  So, if we were betting, I'd see your ten dollars and raise you a thousand C notes.  Because that's what this criminal "mental illness" case will cost to get the attention of the judicial system.  This is a $Million Dollar$ Baby.
First of all, no lawyer in Oklahoma wants this case.  (See my Aug 31, 2017 blog: Lawyers. Part 1.)
No lawyers in Oklahoma focus on Mental Health.  There's no money in it for them.  And Oklahoma's MedMal caps are too low for personal injury attorneys to be able to afford to take these cases.  It's a lose lose, as always.  The perpetual losing hand just got exponential.  Losing to the millionth degree, (not an exaggeration.)  I was told by a top expert in Oklahoma that this case could go into the millions of dollars and needs a TEAM of top lawyers.  And this is what THIS ONE FAMILY is trying to accomplish.  A Judge friend told me last month, that unless someone actually hires a lawyer to bring such a case, nothing will change.
It would have to go to the
SCOTUS -
but for a million dinero
it sure the heck ought to.
High stakes.  Powerful entities, powerful people, playing their hands.
And the guy sitting in solitary in cell W at Tulsa County Jail mental pods, is the pawn.
Do they adhere to the official medical records proving Jeff's medical condition that they just don't know HOW to treat?
No, they don't.
Do they take phone calls from family trying to help them, help Jeff?
No, they don't.
They ignore, and then the head jail administrator enters the picture telling the family his staff will now be sending any communications from us, directly to him.  Funny how when other staff member(s) there were trying to help us help my brother, and we were told they try to be "transparent" ...apparently not. That all ended. He will only respond to us with a "mailed" letter, instead of email (even though we asked to also have a digital record), but no.  David Parker says email isn't secure.  Is mail secure?  I'm sure that can be argued.  How will we even know when he does send a reply via USPS? He's clamping down on us.  Gee, thanks for nothing.  Parker has his legal team involved now, due to us sending more records.  So, all you reporters out there that tell the taxpayers how much DLMCJC is shelling out for attorney fees, add this case to that bottom line.  It has begun.
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/oklahoma/articles/2017-12-24/tulsa-county-sheriffs-office-legal-fees-at-850-000
Sadly, the pot is getting bigger (and the plot is getting thicker too!) with each hand dealt and played.  For Jeff, it's his life that's at stake as each day passes.  He is deteriotating.  We speak to him daily.  Mom sees him every chance she is offered, which under Parker's regime, since August 1, 2017 visits only allowed once per week, max 30 minutes.  She drives from McAlester, round trip, aged 74 and poor.  This is expensive to her monetarily, to her health, and her heart breaks a little more with every delusional phone call, and every 5 hour round trip once-a-week-jail-visit to Tulsa.  Again, high, exponential stakes.
Quite the ripple effect, the clamp has.
http://www.tulsaworld.com/homepagelatest/tulsa-jail-to-cut-visitation-days-limit-visitors-to-save/article_3f7aab26-1c1c-5abb-b4cb-c08137fb2248.html
Parker comes from a Department of Corrections background.  He deals in criminals.  Jeff isn't a criminal, but that IS his status.  The staff at the jail wears that lens, that's their job.  My point is, it SHOULDN'T BE THEIR JOB TO PUNISH THE MENTALLY ILL.  I hope to eventually get them relieved of this massive burden.  They are not equipped to handle the severely mentally ill.
https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/were-more-likely-to-jail-the-mentally-ill-than-get-them-help-34739
Delusions are real to those that suffer them.
And when the delusions are caused
by overzealous drugging, contra-indicated,
that means
 - in this case -
the "criminal" is the victim.
I know that's hard for them to wrap their heads around.  Who has time to actually understand these complexities?!  It's just a LIFE in the balance.  Or is Jeff (and others like him) just a number behind thick glass and bars?  It's a damned shame is all I know.  The mentally ill deserve to be cared for, not punished.  But jailers aren't there to care.  They're there to house these "inmates" until trial.
The jail isn't DOC, and Jeff isn't even officially an inmate.  He's a pretrial detainee.  He hasn't been convicted of anything, but the longer it takes for trial, the more money each person brings in and the more sick Jeff gets.
Check this out:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX2R0b_mqrQ
I learned a LOT from this little ditty.
We are making headway on the civil front.  Thankful.  But Jeff may be transferred back to Oklahoma Forensic Center in Vinita, in a month or so.  Then the drugging experiments will begin anew.  We are going to try to STOP that from happening again.  This back and forth from Vinita to jail and jail to Vinita is wasting YOUR TAX DOLLARS, OKLAHOMA.  And it is KILLING my brother.  Thus, we found a top attorney.  But for him to enter the case, it's a minimum of $50,000 up front.  This will include his rate and a fund for experts.  This case needs many experts.  This case will teach everyone.  And in turn, this case will end up saving Jeff, will end up saving millions of dollars for the state budget, and will turn the tide in the crap shoot of the treatment has has endured for 29 of his 48 years on this earth.  I don't know how much more he can live through.
We are taking donations, even at $1 a pop, on a crowd sourcing site.  Message me if you want to help.  It's way too much for one family, and there are many families like ours that we will be making a much better future for, with THIS CASE.
It's time.
REFLECTIONS on 2017: A Record Year
New Year's Eve, 2017.
Looking back on this past year....
December 31, 2016:
One year ago today, my brother, Wm. Jeffrey Welton, was languishing in the Oklahoma Forensic Center in Vinita, Oklahoma, after DLMCJC Tulsa County Jail had kept him in solitary confinement for 111 days until November 14, 2016 when the court transferred him to OFC, deeming him incompetent to stand trial for his "crime."
For context, the arresting incident on July 26, 2016 was fully due to a delusional state of mind, caused by a lifetime of trauma, misdiagnosis, abuse, and 20/20 hindsight we know familial nutritional deficiencies, the adverse effects of sugar, no consistency of care in the mental health "system", forcing of every neuroleptic/anti-psychotic RX Big Pharma has to offer...
and now we know, medical malpractice.
In 2017, we've been purchasing
Jeff's official medical records.
We were approached by someone
in the entertainment industry to do a documentary on Jeff's life.
So, in order to create a timeline,
we need actual records.
The accumulated hospital list alone, is daunting; about fifty facilities, some of them Jeff has been forced into numerous times.  That doesn't count all the times he has been jailed.  Then there's the drug list.  It is mind-blowing.  Pages and pages of neuroleptic brain chemicals, dosages, dates, doctors, facilities...  Our mother has done amazing due-diligence all these years.  She's a masterful record keeper, and documentarian.  So, the story had legs even without the newly gathered, thousands and thousands of pages of medical/psych records on Jeff.  But now, we have new, full records, bought, paid for, stamped, official, and are still gathering more.
They aren't easy to get.  Back in February 2017 we were requesting records from all five of Jeff's Vinita stints since 1989, and we were at first, ignored.  The records department did not respond to our requests, even though we have the legal right to speak on behalf of Jeff to all caregivers.  Jeff has always signed the Designated Treatment Advocate form, an Oklahoma Statute under 43A O.S. § 1-109.1.  ( http://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/DeliverDocument.asp?CiteID=436655 )
Mom ended up having to type a release for Jeff to sign, mail it to him to turn in. Still, his case manager at Vinita did not comply.
Next, we pursued getting his decades of records from Carl Albert Community Mental Health Center in our hometown of McAlester.  Mom again typed a FULL release for records, mailed it to Jeff at OFC.  Jeff signed and returned it (and we have all these digitally saved) and in the spring 2017, Mom was informed by CACMHC to come pick them up.  Yes!
  (Or so we thought...)
What happened was, [Name withheld] gave mom 62 pages, which consisted of only "Admit and Discharge" for the countless times Jeff has been held at CACMHC.  SIXTY TWO PAGES.  It was quite disappointing, because it was nowhere near what we expected to get, and even with their legal right to destroy records older than seven years, 62 pages was NOT his full and complete records.  He'd been a patient at CACMHC many times in the past seven years (on top of the past three decades the rest of which they had the right to destroy), and if you've ever seen medical records, it includes daily doctor notes, all meds, a bunch of stuff I don't yet understand...pages upon pages.  But we were powerless to do anything...
While mom was chasing this dog, I was on the nonstop lawyer hunt. A friend reached out and reconnected me with an Oklahoma Judge that I was in the Pride of Oklahoma band with in 1982. This Judge gave me a handful of attorney suggestions and I called each of them. One of these was Robin Wilson Moore. When I googled and got her contact information, I emailed her and she called me back the next day.  A very kind lady.  She didn't know anything about our story, so during the call, when she realized Jeff's life has been adversley affected by the forced-drugging at every state facility in Oklahoma, she stopped me from saying anything further, because she's the Senior Attorney at the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, and the facilities I was complaining about are her clients.  WOW!  Oops...
(Yeah, I know...I was literally ignorant,
but 2017 has advanced my learning curve, exponentially.)
I had already told Attorney Moore how impossible it was to get Jeff's records, even when Jeff signs a release.  Jeff's basic rights were (big surprise) being violated, and the family's attempt at helping him thwarted, due to an arrogant system of facility administrators that think they don't have to adhere to legal statutes and Jeff's own signature to GET HIS RECORDS.  We always wondered - what are they afraid of?  What's the problem with getting the records?  We are willing to pay the (exorbitant) fee for printing, etc...why are we consistently ignored?  Anyway, Attorney Moore cannot help Jeff's legal case (which is the original reason I was calling her), but because she has a good heart, what she DID do was the legal and right thing; She said her office could help us get Jeff's records. Since then, we've been able to email Attorney Moore's administrative assistant to order them each time.  She facilitates the invoice and tells us when they're ready, which has been very helpful.  My only problem with this is, what about all the other families that want/need to get official records for their loved ones in psych facilities?  This was an impossible process, and we had to get special "favors" by important people to make it happen.  It's WAY TOO HARD for Jeff (an indigent, mentally disabled person), and for the family trying to help him.  What do other families do?  My guess is, they give up.  Another reason the state of Oklahoma is overrun with jails and prisons more than half full of citizens with a mental illness diagnosis.  The system is not conducive to families helping their loved ones, even when they have the will to.  It's ridiculously difficult.  Fixing some of these issues will help ease the overburdened system, imho.
In addition, something very interesting happened.  We asked Attorney Moore's office to
RE-REQUEST all records from CACMHC in McAlester (again).  Less than one month later, the very same person [name withheld] that gave mom only 62 pages, suddenly produced 368 pages!
 *****Jeff's "full request" was not honored *****
 ***** until the ODMHSAS attorney's office put the same request in. *****
Something's terribly wrong with this picture...and sadly, it's a systemic problem.
And yet another reason we need systemic change.
"Oh!  What a tangled web we weave,
when first we practice to deceive."
Sir Walter Scott
So, fast forward month after month, records request after records request, batch by batch, hospital by hospital, building the timeline with Jeff's official records, a revelation occured.  Within those many thousands of pages, we uncovered some bombshells.  Several facilities list a diagnosis code for Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP), which is an enzyme disorder that can mimic psychosis, but which administering anti-psychotic drugs is not ony contra-indicated, it can cause psychosis.  We've had lab tests showing Jeff's corprophorins are out of range, ( http://www.hmdb.ca/metabolites/HMDB00643 ) and mother has filed these records into the court ad nauseum all these years, as well as telling ALL Jeff's caregivers, but NO ONE HAS LISTENED.
My brother has been MedMal'd for decades,
and while those that profess to "First, do no harm" have done just that.
They have harmed and damaged my brother,
and HE gets punished for it.
So, yes.  This is a time for reflection...
We reflect on our Jeff's life continuing to decline, due to those in "charge" of him, not listening.  Still.
We reflect on another long, hard year, of overcoming those that think they know better, of violating Jeff's rights by ignoring the family, which has always been the case.  The family's diligence has been intelligent...a constant search for answers when Jeff was getting worse, not better, in the "system."
We basically have to put these injurous incidents in "compartments" to be able to move forward, because there are too many egregious, repeated, occasions to be stuck dwelling on.  We have a suffering human needing rescue.  We can't spend time wallowing in every one of those "compartments".  We must keep the bad items compartmentalized, so we can continue dealing with the daily hardship of Jeff being delusional and in extreme physical pain...not getting good nutrition to the point of extreme constipation and nonstop nausea. These are both symptoms of (AIP) Porphyria, btw.  And yes, his current "caregivers" at the DLMCJC Tulsa County Jail mental pods were given the (AIP) Porphyria records on November 15, 2017.  This is the illness they need to be treating, but again, it is being ignored.  Jeff puts in requests several times each week on the kiosk, for Porphyria and Diabetes treatment, and he is ignored.  We call the medical unit (again, we are Jeff's legal Designated Treatment Advocates under the OKLA statute) but they never call back.  As always, we are ignored.  And as always, Jeff suffers due to no one listening to the FACTS. We speak to Jeff, daily.  We know how he's doing every single day.  We do not tarry.
For some positive reflections on this year:
Some folks for the first time, stepped up, finally understanding, really trying to help. Folks in a position to start turning this battle ship around.  It has felt like a war for so many years...this feels like a miracle.  But yes, a glimmer of HOPE is in sight.  Hope, not only for JEFF, but for so many others like him, for Oklahoma, and - in my big-picture, long-term thinker mind, the entire country.
I've always believed the life Jeff has lived
 - which he does not deserve -
would one day have great meaning.
My instincts are telling me it has begun.
Now, to keep pushing the envelope forward.
2017 also had some AMAZING new developments, some of which I cannot speak of, just yet.
But this family lives in a massive state of gratitude for the new additions to "Team Jeff"
that we didn't have one year ago.
World changers, that have the "resumes" and credentials
to get those that ignore the family and Jeff's records to finally, take notice.
It seems, in Oklahoma, it takes someone "important"
in our corner, to make ANYTHING happen.
This year, we've been getting those connections...
...God has literally thrown them in our lap.
Just as the timeline of Jeff's life story tells hard truths, all this will set things in a new direction, away from arrogance, to finally respecting when a mother that literally gives everything she has, every single day of her life, to SAVE HER SON, is no longer ignored.
People will open their eyes to a new understanding, to new empathy, like never before.
And so we move into 2018 with the energy to continue fighting on.
Jeff is currently still suffering under the punitive system he's been forced into,
but he's still alive.
And as long as he can do it, WE certainly can.
CHEERS to 2018!
May times long past, be put behind,
and may we all have better days ahead.
Should auld aquaintence be forgot, and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and days of auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
